A water main break flooded Soundview streets, leaving a muddy mess for firefighters to fix Thursday.
The break shut down traffic at Lafayette and Thieriot avenues. The water flooded streets and some basements, and eventually turned into ice on roadways. Firefighters and the Department of Environmental Protection spent hours at the scene pumping out water and drilling to find the problem pipe. The incident is under investigation, but the FDNY suspects an old pipe is to blame.A nearby elementary school suffered little damage, but school officials were prepared to evacuate students. Residents still had water despite the break.
