A Bronx man claims the conditions outside of his mother's NYCHA building are worrisome and has called on the agency to come up with a solution.
Temel's mother lives at the Mitchel Houses on Alexander Avenue. He says he has noticed that the building has had some unwelcome neighbors - rats.
"They're in the front of the building.. they're in the parking lot," says Temel.
"One time I came over and had my daughter with me and we were basically trapped in the building. There was a bunch of rats running around.. even if you stomp your feet they'll stay here," says Temel.
The area around the building is littered with garbage and burrows can be seen in the grass areas. While Temel says he doesn't live in the building himself, he worries about his mother and her neighbors.
News 12 reached out to NYCHA, and the agency responded that the building was treated for rodents last Tuesday and an extermination was performed on Thursday.
The representative told News 12 that garbage is removed daily. They also said notices were posted about proper garbage disposal.
Temel says he hopes this solution sticks.
"We just need NYCHA to do a better job. This is inhumane conditions and I believe they can fix the problem," said Temel.
