‘Wealth over health’ – Mayor says 8 restaurants face fines in Newark

Eight restaurants in Newark have received citations for not wearing masks or other PPE while serving customers.
Mayor Ras Baraka says the citations came on the fourth day of the 10-day citywide lockdown advisory.
Baraka says those businesses put “wealth over health.”
In Newark, the positivity rate is 41% in the East Ward and 21% in the West Ward – which is twice the rate of the entire state of New Jersey.
A citywide lockdown advisory went into effect at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Officials say they are trying to avoid the level of hospitalizations seen during the beginning of the pandemic.
The names of the restaurants that were fined were not made public.
