A Bronx community says it's worried that fires will become normal during New York City winters following a two-alarm fire Sunday that tore through a Bedford Park building.
The FDNY says the fire started around 7 p.m. and more than 100 firefighters responded to the scene. Officials say the fire started on the third-floor and injured two firefighters.
The Red Cross says it's helping six families who have been displaced.
Residents tell News 12 that they think heating issues can be the reason why these fires are starting, especially following the tragic Twin Parks fire that started from a space heater and killed 17 people.
"Every winter you hear of so many house fires because so many people don't have heat, the landlords don't turn the heat on…It's a constant problem every winter," says Winston, who lives in the area.
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, 122 fatal fires were reported in homes across the state last year.
"I think it's unfortunate we have to deal with that as New Yorkers," Winston says.
