Weight loss drug coverage begins July 1 under new Medicaid pilot program

A new pilot program will expand access to weight loss treatments beginning July 1.

Officials say eligible Medicaid enrollees will be able to receive weight loss medications for $50 a month.

The program is designed to help patients access treatments that can otherwise be costly.

Officials say the copayments will not count toward a patient's deductible or out-of-pocket maximum.

Many doctors and patient advocates have voiced support for the initiative.

While federal law generally prohibits Medicare from covering medications prescribed solely for weight loss, officials say the pilot program is permitted because it is being operated on a temporary basis.
