The construction to replace the deck on the westbound lane, which began back in September 2020, has been described as absolute chaos with an ever-changing traffic pattern.
On Friday, the westbound lanes reopened completely - almost a year ahead of schedule. Commuters say that it couldn't come soon enough.

“The biggest stress in the world was going over that bridge, because you don’t know if you’re going left, you don’t know if you’re going right. you don’t know if they’re going to put you in a single lane, you don’t know if you’re going to have the oncoming right next to you. They had us kind of every day guessing which way we were going to go," says commuter Corey Adams.
An estimated 24 million vehicles crossed over the bridge back in 2021, making it the most heavily used bridge by the New York State Bridge Authority.
