Westchester County Executive George Latimer delivered boxes of PPE supplies to Tarrytown Friday morning.
Latimer tells News 12 that the county takes great pride in businesses and religious institutions – so the goal is to keep them open.
Business owners like Ona Cohn seem to agree with him, saying in part, “There are a lot of small businesses here and restaurants that I would like to see continue on.”
A total of 5,000 masks and hand sanitizer were given to the village. The items will be distributed it to the community for use.
"We're going to try to keep a steady flow because masks need to be replenished after a certain period of time,” says Latimer.
The effort is put in place to control Tarrytown’s number of cases and prevent it from upgrading to an orange zone.
Residents like Giselle Rodriguez say they’re concerned about the uptick in cases. “I mean, it’s unfortunate, but I think we also have to be very careful," says Rodriguez.
When it comes to taking responsibility, Mayor Thomas Butler believes business owners should set the standard. “The ball's in their court in terms of maintaining social distance and making sure that people that come to their restaurant wear a mask,” says Butler.
Village officials say much of the responsibility is now on businesses to ensure they’re keeping customers socially distant and wearing masks.
However, business owners say they’re doing their best and holding out hope for an improvement in case number over the coming weeks.
