As the first day of in-person learning for middle and high school students got underway, students at I.S. 318 in Williamsburg arrived to new changes and safety measures.

For the first time since March, middle school students at I.S.318 are being taught by teachers in person while sitting in the classroom.

As they entered the building Thursday morning to start their school day, things were a bit different. Students and staff were wearing masks, and temperatures were checked before every student entered.

One parent tells News 12 that while she did have some reservations about sending her daughter to school, staff has assured parents that the school is ready for students to come back.

With Williamsburg being one of the neighborhoods seeing an uptick in COVID-19 cases, the parent says that’s also a concern for her.

However, she tells News 12 she’s going to see how the first day plays out before making a decision to either continue the hybrid learning model she has chosen for her daughter, or to choose a completely online learning model.

“I mean we’re going to see how it goes. Today’s the first day. If I see any signs or if she comes home complaining then, you know, I’ll pull her or not. But we’ll see what happens,” says parent Stefanie Montanez.
