Sara Adair was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital last summer after experiencing intense chest pain. What might have been a mystery to many was something that she recognized immediately -- a life-threatening tear in her aorta -- the same rare condition her sister had survived two years earlier.
“When the EMTs arrived and brought me back to consciousness, I made sure to tell them RWJ New Brunswick was the only place that could help me,” Adair said. “I gave them other directives, like my diagnosis, what route to take, how fast to drive, all of which I’m sure they appreciated.”
Adair and her sister were diagnosed with Loeys-Dietz syndrome – a genetic connective tissue disorder that increases the risk of serious vascular issues like aortic dissections.
