While fire officials have not set a date for the demolition of Ladder 39, they say structural damage makes it necessary. Bronx leaders counter that the station has deteriorated because the FDNY ignored it. The fire department is considering relocating the firefighters to a Wakefield station.
Bronx residents say in a fire every second counts, so moving Woodlawn firefighters could slow response times to deadly blazes. According to fire officials, Ladder 39?s response times would improve if moved to Wakefield.
