Just weeks removed from the U.S. Open, Arthur Ashe Stadium is set to feature matches of a different kind tonight - AEW's Grand Slam 2022.
All Elite Wrestling owner and CEO Tony Khan made it clear Wednesday night is going to be big. AEW's flagship program Dynamite will air across the world on TBS from Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens. They'll also be taping Friday night's Rampage.
AEW held the first wrestling show at the tennis center last year. It was their first show in New York City and pulled in over 20,000 fans.
That same energy will be felt by the wrestlers in action, including Ring of Honor world champion Claudio Castagnoli who will defend his title against the one and only Chris Jericho. Castagnoli told News 12 tonight will check off another career goal for the Swiss Superman.
"To me, Arthur Ashe, I wanted to go there since I moved to the States," Castagnoli says.
The son of wrestling legend Taz, a Brooklyn native, is also appearing. Taz, who now works for AEW as an announcer and coach, says he's looking forward to seeing his son enter the ring in his old stomping grounds.
"Him and Action Bronson tagging up in Queens is going be wild for me as a fan of pro wrestling, as his dad, as as someone who is part of AEW like myself. I can't put it into words," says Taz.
Khan says to expect some surprises in tonight's matches.
"Expect a lot, and you shall not be disappointed," Khan says.
