11-year-old allegedly attacked on bus by fellow student
An 11-year-old boy was allegedly attacked by a fellow student on his school bus Tuesday.
The incident happened as the school bus stopped on Watson and Noble avenues in Soundview.
Jayden de la Cruz says that his attacker hit him repeatedly in the face and gave him a bloody nose. The bus driver says that the attack on de la Cruz lasted for about three minutes.
Recordings of the attack captured by the victim has audio of him screaming for help, and the mother of the student who attacked him allegedly encouraging the violence.
The incident report taken by administrators at Emolior Academy states that the mother of the alleged attacker was yelling at students on the bus and allegedly hit the bus matron after she blocked her from entering the bus. The report goes on to say that the bus driver intervened in the attack and immediately called police and the victim's mother.
Betty Martinez, de la Cruz's mother, says that she had warned academy administrators in the past about how she feared for her sons safety after an earlier incident occurred with her son's alleged attacker. She says that that the school has yet to inform her of any disciplinary actions against her son's attacker, and adds that she plans to press charges against the student and his mother.
A spokesperson for the Department of Education's Office of Pupil Transportation says that an internal investigation and a police investigation are being conducted.
A representative from the Office of Pupil Transportation says that the student who allegedly attacked de la Cruz will be on a new bus route starting this Tuesday.
