Mayor Bill de Blasio has directed the NYPD to crack down on drivers who park in bike lanes after the death of a 28-year-old cyclist who was struck by a cement truck Monday.
In an incident caught on camera, Devra Freelander, 28, attempted to swerve out of the way of the truck while riding on Bushwick Avenue and Boerum Street – but it was too late.
Police say the 70-year-old driver stayed on the scene and was not charged.
Freelander became the 15th cyclist to die so far this year in New York City.
On top of the parking crackdown, the mayor also directed the city Department of Transportation to come up with a new cyclist safety plan that can be immediately implemented.
Friends of Freelander told News 12 she was an incredible artist who made sculptures. According to her website, she also made videos that explored climate change.
