Nineteen officers from the 40th Precinct in the Bronx are facing departmental charges after investigators found they were underreporting crime data.
According to an internal audit, there were a number of instances of failure to process crime complaints properly. Police Commissioner William Bratton announced that the errors were made during a four-month period in 2014.
The audit reviewed radio call response activity, as well as the inspection of 1,558 complaint reports. According to the inspection team, there were a total of 55 instances of misreported crimes.
The majority of the misreported crimes were for petit larceny, lost property, misdemeanor assault, criminal mischief and criminal trespass.
The 19 members of the police force who are facing administrative disciplinary action include a lieutenant, eight sergeants, nine police officers and one detective. The commanding officer of the 40th Precinct has been administratively transferred.
