4-way crosswalks come to Riverdale intersections
Enhanced, four-way crosswalks have been installed at some Riverdale intersections in an effort to improve safety.
The new markings can be spotted along West 235th Street at Oxford and Cambridge avenues, as well as at West 238th Street and Irwin Avenue.
According to Vision Zero data, there were crashes in which one person was injured at each of those intersections since 2017.
In addition to what the city Department of Transportation calls high-visibility crosswalks, the intersections also have new signage alerting drivers to pedestrians and Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps.
A DOT presentation to the community board in April proposed adding enhanced crosswalks at West 235th Street and Riverdale Avenue and at West 238th Street and Waldo Avenue, but those locations have not yet seen any changes.
The DOT says it put the new crosswalks in place after finding a need for accessibility improvements to the area.
