Members of the NYPD came out Tuesday to host National Night Out -- an event made to create strong relationships between the community and police.
Every year, police departments around the city work to promote positive community relationships.
The 40th Precinct is the host for this year's event, meaning it is representing all of the Bronx.
The deputy inspector says gang violence has plagued the community but that the precinct is working to address the violence and already seeing a decline in major crime categories.
"We communicate with them, be like, this is what's going on, how can we stop it?" said anti-violence advocate Maria Lopez.
The inspector attributes the success to the NYPD's Neighborhood Coordination Officers program, which allows for the community to work closely with police.
