43rd Precinct mourns loss of veteran sergeant
Bunting hung from the 43rd Precinct Saturday after a longtime veteran of the NYPD was gunned down in the Bronx Friday.
Purple and black drapes the entrance to the precinct, and flowers and candles were placed in honor of Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo.
Tuozzolo was shot and killed Friday while responding to a radio call of a suspect that had fled the scene of a break-in. Officials say Tuozzolo and another sergeant were shot by 35-year-old Manual Rosales, of Long Island. The other sergeant, Emmanuel Kwo, was injured and has since been released from the hospital.
Rosales was killed at the scene. News 12 was at his home on Long Island, where his father said his son "deserved it."
Tuozzolo, 49, dedicated 10 of his 18 years on the force serving the 43rd Precinct. He would have marked his 19th year with the NYPD next month.
Mayor Bill de Blasio says the city is in mourning, and says officials are committed to helping Sgt. Tuozzolo's family for years to come. He left behind a wife and two young children.
In a statement, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. said, "This heartbreaking incident puts into clear focus both the difficulties our police officers face every day, and the true scourge of guns and gun violence faced by our police, our communities and our nation."
