50th Precinct reports spike in felony assaults
The 50th Precinct is reporting a sharp increase in certain crimes.
Felony assaults increased 5 percent around the city, but within the 50th Precinct they spiked 52.5 percent.
In the first seven months of 2016, 93 cases were reported, compared to 61 cases during the same period in 2015.
Longtime neighbors say their rent prices are also going up, and they want to feel safe in their homes.
"I feel it's kind of sad though because I'm used to feeling comfortable but now that I have to keep an extra eye out and I'll have to start coming home like a tad bit earlier," says neighbor Tovah Rivere.
Officials say the hot weather leads to more people being outside and usually more crime.
The precinct has also yet to fully implement the Neighborhood Coordinating Officers program, which seeks to better engage officers with the community.
