A devastating earthquake struck Albania Tuesday, and the effects of the 6.4 magnitude earthquake are being felt in the Bronx.
The earthquake struck at around 4 a.m. and at least 18 people were killed and hundreds more were injured. The deadly quake's terrors may have been felt in Albania, but they also emotionally struck those living in the Bronx as they wait to hear from their family back home.
The earthquake was followed by a 5.5 magnitude tremor, and it is said there have been over 100 aftershocks since.
Chris Kirka is from Durres, and his family lives just 20 miles away from the epicenter. He says he lived through a similar trembling experience for the first time at just the age of eight, in 1978.
This was the last time Albania was hit with a massive earthquake.
As Kirka's family and the community back in Albania rebuild from the rubble, local officials in the Bronx are reaching out to New Yorkers for help.
Search and rescue teams from neighboring countries already have headed to Albania to assist with relief.
