A record number of people are expected to hit the road, skies and water this Memorial Day weekend, as AAA estimates that over 42 million travelers will be on the move this holiday.
AAA says that Friday afternoon until 6 p.m. is considered the worst time to travel, with many people leaving and an almost equally large influx of people entering New York City. They say that the city is the second-biggest travel destination for Memorial Day weekend.
This weekend is projected to be the third-highest travel weekend in over 20 years, with the majority of travelers commuting by car. The good news for drivers is that gas is down approximately $1.30 from last year, and AAA says that the demand for gas is not as high this year as it’s been in recent years.
“Flat tires and dead batteries are the top items we’ll get calls for,” said Robert Sinclair Jr., representative of AAA Northeast. “Check those items before you hit the road, make sure your tires are properly inflated, have your battery test to make sure it’s holding a good charge.”
As for coming home, AAA says that Monday between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. and between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. will be the busiest times on the road.
