Activists ask tenants to take action after rent laws expire
Community activists in the Bronx are asking tenants to take action after the deadline to extend the city's rent regulations expired without any action from state lawmakers in Albany.
News 12 spoke with tenant leaders at Community Action for Safe Apartments about what rent-stabilized tenants need to know.
Rent-stabilized laws protect tenants by allowing them to stay in their apartment for as long as they wish. They also have rights to fair maintenance of their building and other protections.
According to CASA, the ability to have an automatic lease renewal will disappear if further inaction occurs in Albany. When a lease expires, the landlord could raise the rent to market value, which could leave nearly 2.5 million tenants displaced.
CASA says votes like this have been pushed back in Albany before and were eventually passed.
State lawmakers have until Wednesday to reach a deal before the end of the legislative season. If no deal is reached, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has promised to call lawmakers back into session.
Anyone with further concerns about their rent situation can call 311 for more information.
