Community organizations, lawyers and so-called "dreamers" protested outside a Downtown Brooklyn courthouse Tuesday against President Donald Trump's termination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program, or DACA.
A lawsuit was filed to challenge the decision. At a hearing earlier this month, a judge asked the Trump administration to extend the Oct. 5 renewal deadline to allow Congress more time to secure a permanent solution for dreamers.
Those behind the lawsuit have since submitted an amended complaint arguing that the end of DACA violates federal statutes and the Constitution. They also added five new plaintiffs to the case.
"I am American in every way -- in my mind, in my heart, in every way but one: paper," said dreamer Carlos Vargas.
Dreamers said they were hoping to find out Tuesday whether Congress' deadline for an alternative solution had been extended. They said they will continue fighting until the decision to end DACA is overturned.
DACA protects about 800,000 undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children from deportation.
