The Bronx and Staten Island are the only boroughs right now where bail cannot be paid 24/7 at the courthouse, something advocates say is a major issue.
In order to pay bond at any given time, families have to go to the Vernon C. Bain Center or the jail boat on the East River by Halleck Street, which is more than three miles away from the courthouse and is accessible only by bus or walking.
News 12 reached out to the mayor’s office. They say they will be installing bail kiosks near post-arraignment areas soon where eligible inmates will be able to post their own bail.
For now, Elena Weissman, the director of the nonprofit Bronx Freedom Fund, says 24/7 bail windows should be an option at court so innocent people can avoid being shipped off to Rikers or another city jail.
Families can post bail online at any time of day, but advocates say it’s not sufficient because cash payments aren't an option there.
