Advocates from across the city are pushing for major bail reform in New York, saying the current system is tearing families apart.
Local advocates and clergy rallied today at Foley Square in lower Manhattan. They say the current bail system discriminates against minorities and low-income families.
The brother of Kalief Browder, who committed suicide after his release from Rikers Island, and Jessica Perez, whose son was held at Rikers for more than a year, both spoke about how the current bail system almost destroyed their families.
Advocates also point to overcrowded jails, trial delays and prolonged jail time on Rikers Island as other issues in need of reform.
