Anti-violence group celebrates 380 days without a shooting
A group opposed to gun violence celebrated 380 days without a shooting in its 12-block portion of Morrisania Wednesday, although the streak ended a day earlier.
The Save Our Streets: Morrisania group says that it went from Sept. 2015 to this month without a shooting inside its territory. Police say the good fortune ended when someone was shot on East 166th Street Tuesday night.
Still, the group says the 380-day period was a sign of progress. It seeks to give young people an alternative to gun violence by helping them find jobs.
According to the mayor's office of criminal justice, shootings are down by 42 percent this year compared to the same period last year within the NYPD's 42nd Precinct, which includes Morrisania.
