Archdiocese scraps plan to merge 2 Bronx parishes
Parishioners in Mott Haven are breathing a sigh of relief Friday, knowing that a community staple isn't going anywhere.
The Archdiocese of New York announced that the merger of Saint Luke's and Saint Jerome's churches has been reconsidered. If the two had combined, it would have meant sharing resources and consolidating masses.
"I am so ecstatic. I'm happy, I'm happy for this community, I'm just happy for us, I'm just happy," parishioner Wanda Feliciano said of the news.
Officials say that up to 800 Catholics from Ghana are planning to join Saint Luke's, which will allow it to remain a vibrant parish in the community and make the merger unnecessary.
