Army vet donates kidney, inspires 3 other donors
Thousands of people are waiting for a new kidney, but one Bronx man has started a chain reaction that is making the list for a transplant a little bit shorter.
Army veteran Chris Forthman has donated a kidney to save not just one life, but four.
"If there's something I can do, then it should be done," Forthman says.
Forthman, 30, donated his kidney to 64-year-old Juan Garcia, whose daughter gave hers to someone else in need. The swapping continued until four people donated, and in exchange, four of their loved ones received a kidney.
"I can eat again, I can drink fluids again, my life has been restored," says 52-year-old Rebecca Cherry, who was on dialysis and had no idea if her life would ever be normal again.
All eight people will be recovering for the next few days at Montefiore Medical Center.
