City officials say they are working to improve safety in Co-op City, specifically in heavy traffic areas near local schools.
State Assemblyman Michael Benedetto recently met with community members and city Department of Transportation officials to express traffic safety concerns.
"We're standing right now on Hutchinson River Parkway outside a public school. There's no signs up, no indication that the people are passing a school," says Benedetto.
Benedetto wants to evaluate turn signals and lights in the area, fix broken road barriers and make them a uniform color as well as add signage to protect students walking.
Residents who spoke to News 12 say cars need to slow down, even calling one particularly treacherous section of road "Killer's Curve."
Benedetto says he expects to work on the traffic improvements this fall. The DOT says it is looking at the location for a future safety project and gathering data. It also said it is working with the community on the changes.
