An athletic trainer sprang into action Friday to save a Bronx high school basketball player's life.

The incident occurred during an Archbishop Stepinac High School basketball game after a player on the opposing team took a dangerous fall.

There was one minute left in the freshman basketball game between White Plains' Archbishop Stepinac and the Bronx's Mount St. Michael Academy when the player from the Mountaineers jumped for a rebound but came down awkwardly.

"He landed, and when he landed on his back, he ended up smacking his head into the ground," said athletic trainer Max Anderson.

Anderson says he ran from his corner in the back of the gym onto the court and performed rescue breaths and CPR on the injured athlete.

He says that within five compressions, the athlete was breathing again.

"Best sound I ever heard was that gasp…I was so happy to get him back," he says.

The athlete was released from the hospital over the weekend and cleared to go back to school.
