The attorney representing the estate of Kalief Browder confirmed Friday that a settlement worth $3.3 million was reached.

Kalief Browder, 22, killed himself in 2015 after he was released from Rikers Island.

Browder was arrested in 2010 for allegedly stealing a backpack and spent three years in jail only to have his charges dropped. He spent about half that time in solitary confinement.

Activists and family members have worked to make sure his death wasn't in vain.

Law enforcement officials say they hope the settlement brings some closure to the Browder family.

In 2016, President Barack Obama cited Browder's case in his decision to ban juvenile solitary confinement. His death has also been instrumental in the push to close Rikers altogether.

A surrogate court will decide how that settlement will be distributed to the individual members of Browder's family.
