One man has died and another was rescued after the friends were struggling to swim and had to be pulled from Darlington Lake in Bergen Country.

Officials say that a 20 and 21-year-old were swimming in the lake Thursday evening when they began to struggle in the water. Mahwah and Ramsey police were called to the scene and the men were pulled out of the lake and given medical attention.

One of the men was taken to Valley Hospital, but was pronounced dead. His name was not released.

Officials say that the men were not permitted to be in the lake, which is open for swimming only on weekends for this time of the year.
