Authorities: 12 arrested in South Jersey ‘ghost gun’ ring
The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General announced Monday that 12 men are facing charges in an alleged “ghost gun” and cocaine trafficking ring in Camden County.
Attorney General Gurbir Grewal says that the crime ring was trafficking untraceable AR-15 rifles and drugs. He says that it is a landmark case.
Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation last November making it illegal to buy components to build unregistered firearms without serial numbers.
Grewal says that it is due to this law that officials were able to shut down the alleged crime ring. In a news release, Grewal said that “investigators captured defendants discussing that a gun sale would be delayed” due to the new law. “They would instead need to have [the guns] shipped to Pennsylvania. On March 13, authorities intercepted parts for two more assault rifles allegedly ordered by two of the defendants for shipment to Bensalem, Pennsylvania.”
“This case starkly illustrates why ghost guns are so dangerous, because drug dealers and other criminals can easily acquire them and traffic them into our communities,” Grewal said in a statement.
Grewal says that the 12 men were arrested between March 8 and March 14.
