Authorities rescued a man Tuesday afternoon after he became stranded on Two Trees Island on Orchard Beach due to high tide.
Dr. Eugene Fine was wrapping up five days of holiday celebrations with his immediate and extended family when his wife, Lisa Liquori, took him, her sister and brother-in-law to explore a small peninsula at the end of Orchard Beach.
Liquori says they got all the way to Two Trees Island when high tide caused the water to rise. It surrounded the strip of land.
Fine says that as his family made their way back to the mainland, he had to relieve himself, which led him to falling behind the rest of the group.
The water became too deep for Fine, leaving him stranded on the island.
Liquori says she then called 911, and within 10 minutes, firefighters were on the ground while police approached by air and water.
The NYPD Harbor Unit got Fine on a small boat, then a bigger one, before reuniting him with his family on the beach.
The Parks Department tells News 12 The Bronx, "While there are no regulations, we strongly encourage those who venture out to check the tide chart so they are able to return to shore safely."
