Saturday marks one year since the disappearance of Avonte Oquendo.

The 14-year-old boy with autism ran out of his Queens school on Oct. 4, 2013. The search ended in tragedy when his remains were found in the East River three months later.

Oquendo's lawyer and family say they cannot believe the school's employees received a slap on the wrist for the loss of a student.

Since his death, the City Council passed Avonte's Law, which requires the Department of Education to evaluate the need for alarms to be installed on outside doors at schools and other areas that seem necessary.

Elected officials say they think the assessments need to move faster.
