The stench of garbage lingers in the air on the property of a NYCHA complex in Soundview.
Piles of garbage can be found lying on top of each other at the Justice Sotomayor Houses near the corner of Watson and Beach avenues.
Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. posted a video of the garbage, including text that reads, “How about we try to start the New Year off right for the tenants of the Sotomayor Houses? These are disgusting, unacceptable conditions that foster rat and vermin infestations. This needs to be cleaned ASAP.”
Diaz tagged the mayor, NYCHA, 311 and the Department of Sanitation in the post.
One tenant in the houses tells News 12 that she lives on the first floor and sometimes the smell travels into her home.
"Sometimes we have to put our windows down so the smell doesn’t go inside,” she says. “Sometimes if I have my windows open, like in the summertime when it gets real hot, you can smell the garbage. It stinks."
Others say they can smell the garbage from across the street, 50 feet away.
NYCHA has responded to News 12’s call for comment with a statement that reads, "While we usually see more trash build up after the holidays, this is unacceptable, and staff are on-site now cleaning the area. We are also coordinating an immediate pick up."
