Bronx borough president pushes back against Rikers plan in Mott Haven
With Rikers Island's days possibly coming to an end soon, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. is taking a stand against one of the mayor's proposed new sites for inmates.
Protests have shown pushback against the proposal to house inmates at 320 Concord Ave. in Mott Haven. Diaz says the jail should be at East 162nd Street and Sherman Avenue instead.
Diaz says the jail could fit right behind the courthouse, streamlining the criminal justice system. He showed News 12 parking spaces that could be converted where the jail could fit.
"You can use the street. You can use the space back here. This is underutilized space we can use to get this right," says Diaz.
Diaz says he wants Bronx residents to have input on where the jail should be before any decisions are finalized. He says the certification process to create a jail in Mott Haven is expected to start next week.
