Bronx residents attend 10th annual Hunts Point Hustle
Dozens of Bronx residents gathered for the annual Hunts Point Hustle event Saturday to celebrate a nonprofit organization that is helping to make the Bronx environmentally friendly.
The 10th annual Hunts Point Hustle is geared toward making the Bronx a healthier borough. The day includes a 5K race, family-bonding activities and food.
The organization that was celebrated was the Sustainable South Bronx, which is a division of the Hope Program. The organization aims to make the borough more environmentally and economically stable by training and hiring Bronx residents for "green" jobs. The Hope Program serves more than 100 Bronx residents each year, many of whom obtain employment.
"It's a way to bring the community together and let people know what we're doing in our community. Our job-training students are here cheering people on, and we have some people running, so we really made sure this was a full community event," says organizer Irene Branch.
Organizers are especially proud of a green space they created at Hunts Point Riverside Park by turning a former illegal dumping site into a recreation space.
