Members of the community turned out Saturday afternoon to celebrate the first event of the “Peace Barbecue Series” in Wakefield this summer.
“We're promoting peace throughout the summer,” said Alfonso Oquendo, the group’s program supervisor. “No more violence, no more shootings, no more fighting.”
The barbecue, held by activist group “Bronx Rises Against Guns,” kicked off Gun Violence Awareness Month and was the first of a series of barbecues to take place throughout summer.
