Bronx students win national speech competition
Two students from the Bronx beat out thousands of performers from across the country to become national winners in duo interpretation.
Steven Durosaiye and Tavan Thomas, a senior and sophomore from Bronx Prep Charter School, were announced as this year's winners at the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Dallas, Texas.
The pair beat out more than 5,000 competitors with their 10-minute comedic skit from the children's book "Jackie and Me," about the baseball player Jackie Robinson.
The prestigious title not only came with a big trophy and guaranteed acceptance into next year's competition, but also $1,000 each in scholarship money.
