Loved ones gathered Tuesday to remember the 17-year-old Bronx basketball star who was shot to death nearly two weeks ago.
Brandon Hendricks’ friends and family gathered on what would have been his 18th birthday.
A large memorial to Hendricks was set up on the basketball courts he used to play on in Melrose.
“He was a real genuine kid,” said Hendrick’s best friend, CJ Riley.
He had recently graduated high school and was in the process of accepting an offer to play basketball at West Hills Community College in California.
“A party for him when everybody plays basketball is the perfect sendoff if you will,” said Hendrick’s uncle Noel Ellison.
On Monday, police arrested 22-year-old Najhim Luke. Luke has been charged with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon in Hendrick’s death.
Ellison says he prays for the suspect's soul but also says that a majority of the community is made up of good kids like his nephew.
