Bronx woman pushes city to fix sinkholes
A Bronx woman has been trying for months to get the city to solve a sinkhole problem on Bainbridge Avenue.
"I just saw a complete deterioration of this area that really affected me," says Barbara Nadaf.
She first noticed a sinkhole in April and immediately contacted the authorities. When that didn't work, she contacted them again in May, in June and now in July it appears her calls are starting to be answered. The DEP showed up Friday morning to assess the damage.
Nadaf says neighbors were reluctant to call for help because they had little faith the city would step in.
"I said call 311, call 911, get somebody here and they said 'nobody's going to do anything for us,'" she says.
In total, there were three sinkholes on the block. It's not clear how long they've actually been there. One sinkhole has been fixed by Con Edison, but the other two remain.
"This is ludicrous to leave people like this," Nadaf says of the remaining holes.
The DEP says it's not immediately clear what's causing the sinkholes.
