Brooklyn mom recovers in hospital after elevator fall that killed baby
A Brooklyn mother is recovering in the hospital Friday after her and her 6-week old daughter fell into a malfunctioning elevator shaft, killing the child.
The 6-week-old girl died Thursday after falling down a high-rise elevator shaft in Coney Island.
It happened around 10:30 a.m. on the 23rd floor of a building at the Sea Rise complex at 3415 Neptune Ave.
Police say the 21-year-old mother pushed her stroller, with the baby inside, once the elevator doors opened, but no elevator was there. The two apparently fell a short distance and landed on top of the elevator, which then continued down several flights.
The Department of Buildings says the elevator involved in the crash passed inspections in January. However, residents say they have reported numerous times over the years that the building's elevators were not working. The most recent complaint was two weeks ago.
In a letter sent out to residents Thursday night, the building's management said they were working with authorities to investigate the incident.
"Elevators in all buildings are currently undergoing inspection," the letter read. "Your safety and well-being are our number one priority."
Letters sent to residents postmarked Thursday said the elevator will temporarily be shut down and the one next to it will be working sporadically, but shouldn't have more than 10 people inside at a time.
The Department of Buildings Commissioner Rick Chandler issued a statement saying, "The death of this little girl is an inexcusable tragedy. We've aggressively enforced the building code at this complex and will continue to do so."
