Busy intersection remodeled for safety reasons
A busy High Bridge intersection known for its hurried commuters and dense traffic has made some significant safety improvements.
Remodeling University Avenue and Edward L. Grant Highway is part of a citywide initiative to dramatically reduce pedestrian fatalities.
Some of the new developments include islands, sidewalk extensions, updated bike markings and a bus stop median, offering a halfway point to prevent pedestrians from getting stuck in the middle of the street.
"I think it's great because before we could get across the street, the light would change and you'd be in middle of traffic. We needed more time to get across so I think this is beautiful," said one Bronx resident.
The Department of Transportation hopes the recent changes will improve the overall safety of Bronx citizens.
