BX family being moved out of poor conditions in shelter
Rodents, poor conditions and flea bites are what a Bronx family claims they had to endure for two long years while living in a family shelter on Southern Boulevard.
The family says they are now receiving help from the city after several months of complaining.
The mother, who wished to be identified as Colon, says bite marks on her three young children later developed into a bacterial infection.
She says for two years she had complained to the city's Department of Homeless Services about rats and fleas in her unit. She claims it was only when she informed elected officials and the media that DHS took action.
"This shouldn't have gotten like this; it should have been a concern because they wouldn't have put their own families in these homes," says Colon.
The family says they are now scrambling to move while repairs are being made to their affected unit.
Although the Bronx mother says she is relieved her family will no longer have to endure poor living conditions, she says she still has not been told where the city will place them.
"I'm being moved randomly to a location where I don't know. I hope it's clean and safe," says Colon.
