Cab driver runs down suspect after being shot
A livery cab driver was robbed and shot Wednesday morning, prompting officials to renew the call for more police efforts in stopping similar crimes.
According to police, 57-year-old Jose Andino Funez chased after the suspect and struck him with his car after being shot during an attempted robbery.
It happened on Longfellow Avenue, near East 172nd Street and P.S. 66 on Jennings Street, at around 11 a.m. Wednesday.
The suspect still managed to get away after being hit. He is described as a black male, around 5 feet 7 inches and in his 30s. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt at the time of the shooting.
The livery driver was hit in the shoulder and hand. He's listed in stable condition at Saint Barnabas Hospital, where his family says he will undergo surgery on Thursday.
New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers Spokesman Fernando Mateo called on Mayor Bill de Blasio to bring back stop-and-frisk to help stop the violence.
Mateo believes the suspect may have jumped into another cab and may be at an area hospital because he was seriously injured.
Anyone with information on the shooter is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
