Cab refuses to take San Juan mayor to the Bronx
The mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico says a New York City taxi driver refused to take her to the Bronx.
Carmen Yulin Cruz has been visiting New York from Puerto Rico.
She said she hailed a yellow taxi Wednesday in Manhattan's West Village neighborhood to go to the Opera House Hotel in the Bronx, where she has been staying with her staff.
After traveling for a few blocks, the driver said he would not go any further. Cruz said the driver claimed to not know where the hotel was and refused to go to the Bronx.
She said she asked the driver to plug the hotel's address into his GPS, but he claimed he didn't have one and told her and her aides to get out of the cab.
She said a second cabbie did agree to go to the Bronx but complained the entire trip.
Cruz says every passenger should be fairly treated, regardless of their destination.
City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito on Thursday condemned the driver's behavior and promised an investigation.
Taxi drivers are required by law to take passengers to any address inside the city.
The city's Taxi and Limousine Commission says it is investigating the incident and will hold the drivers accountable for any wrongdoing.
