Elected officials and community advocates are calling for better lighting conditions at the East New York Long Island Rail Road station.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams says that having the station shrouded in darkness is unwelcoming and potentially dangerous. He's calling on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to upgrade the station with improved signage and accessibility.
Advocates say the MTA's system is broken by its inequity in contrast to other LIRR stations that are far more presentable. They call the East New York station rundown and difficult to navigate.
"Maintaining and improving our infrastructure is essential," an MTA spokesperson said in a statement. "The LIRR recently completed upgrade work on the East New York station including installation of new architectural walls panels on the pedestrian underpass, new LED lighting and new fiberglass stair covers."
Straphangers tell News 12 they still don't think the changes are enough.
The MTA adds that its options are limited when it comes to improve the aesthetics of the station, considering that it sits beneath both a roadway and elevated train tracks.
Adams went as far as inviting Gov. Andrew Cuomo and members of the MTA Board to visit the station, promising a personal tour for them to see the conditions up close.
News 12 reached out to the MTA for further comment but did not hear back.
