Candidates vie for 17th District council seat
The resignation of Maria del Carmen Arroyo in the 17th Council District has several candidates hoping to fill her seat.
One of those candidates is Arroyo's chief of staff Joann Otero. She told News 12 The Bronx that she was worked to establish relationships in the borough for past 11 years.
"I know the struggles of the community I live in because I have been there all my life," she said.
Otero says she hopes to make housing a main part of her campaign.
Another candidate, Amanda Septimo, has been a community activist since she was 15 years old. She currently works for Rep. Jose Serrano.
"I think there is value in people who can bring different experiences and different perspectives to the legislative process and to policy," said Septimo.
At 25, she would be the youngest woman ever elected to the City Council.
The district covers Hunts Point, Port Morris, Morrisania and Crotana.
