Police say a 23-year-old man was caught on surveillance video pouring gasoline all over the entrance lobby of a Kingsbridge apartment building and setting it ablaze.
The incident occurred Sunday morning at 31-19 Bailey Ave. There were no injuries, but damage from the fireball is clearly visible.
Waldo Mejia was arrested Tuesday at the 50th Precinct and charged with burglary and arson.
A woman who has lived in the building for 20 years say she knows Mejia as a “good kid.”
“This is out of nowhere, so I don't know like what's the reason behind it,” says Liza Irizarry.
Authorities have not yet released any motive behind the alleged arson.
Mejia lives down the street from the building. He’s been charged twice since 2015 with criminal possession of a weapon.
