Chancellor backs Lehman H.S. cellphone policy
New York City Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina is backing Lehman High School's new cellphone restriction.
Students now have to check their phones when arriving at the school. They are allowed to pick them up at the end of the school day.
Officials say the move is part of an effort to prevent fighting.
Students say it was common practice for classmates to set up fights through text messages until the policy kicked off in January.
They say fight organizers would have someone pull the fire alarm so students could exit the building and then brawls would break out.
Some students still oppose the measure.
"If you have your phone in school you're more protected," argues Joe Manassei. "What if some kid is getting beat up in the locker room by himself by six people?"
